General Information

Most of the survivor and disability benefits available to you are provided through FlexSolutions. Only BTA Insurance and sick leave are not included in FlexSolutions; instead, these benefits are provided automatically to eligible employees.*

Who Is Eligible

You are eligible to participate in the survivor and disability benefits program if you are an eligible employee as defined under Who Is Eligible. Similarly, you may elect Dependent Life Insurance for your dependents if they meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the eligibility provisions.

When Coverage Becomes Effective

Your Employee Life, AD&D, Dependent Life, BTA, and LTD Insurance coverages begin automatically on the first day of the month coincident with or following your first day of active employment. Your dependents' coverage will generally begin when yours does.

However, you must be actively at work for your coverage to take effect. This rule applies when...

In the event your coverage amount increases (either as a result of a new election or a salary increase), your increased coverage amount will go into effect at the start of the new Plan Year or at the time of your salary increase, as long as you are actively at work. If you are not actively at work on the date your increased coverage would otherwise take effect, your increased coverage will not take effect until you are actively at work for one full day.

Similarly, your dependent's life insurance coverage (or increased coverage) will generally go into effect on the date your coverage begins. However, on the date your dependent's coverage is scheduled to take effect, a dependent must not be confined at home under a physician's care, receiving or applying to receive disability insurance from any source, or hospitalized. If any of these situations apply, coverage for that individual will not begin until he or she is no longer confined, receiving or applying to receive disability insurance from any source, or hospitalized.

Certain other limitations may also apply to your Employee Life Insurance coverage depending on the election you make, as described under Evidence of Insurability.

The Cost Of Coverage

You purchase Employee Life Insurance, and coverage, with FS Credits A&B provides and, if necessary, pre-tax payroll deductions. Each year A&B will determine the amount of FS Credits you will receive to purchase these coverages. The amount is set at a level that ensures you and your family will receive some financial protection at a cost both you and A&B can afford.

If you elect Dependent Life Insurance when you enroll in FlexSolutions, you pay for this coverage with after-tax payroll deductions.

The cost of these coverages are based on the elections you make, your age and salary, and are displayed on the FlexSolutions Enrollment Form you receive as a new hire and each year during Open Enrollment.

A&B, meanwhile, automatically provides all eligible employees with BTA Insurance and sick leave benefits, generally at no cost to you.* You do not need to enroll in these—your coverage begins automatically as explained previously.

* Note that in states where laws mandating short-term disability coverage exist, employees are required to pay for this coverage in accordance with these laws.
